Choose the right Aviation Gasoline

Whether you’re a seasoned aviator or a first-time aircraft owner, navigating the nuances of AVGAS is crucial. We’ve compiled this resource to offer clarity on various aspects of aviation gasoline, helping you make informed decisions for your aviation fuel needs.

The difference between AVGAS 100LL and AVGAS UL91 lies in their lead content and octane rating. AVGAS 100LL contains lead and has an MON rating of > 100, whereas AVGAS UL91 is lead-free and has a MON rating of > 91.

AVGAS UL91 is an unleaded fuel, while 100LL contains a lead-additive. Lead has several disadvantages for the environmental, so UL91 is preferred choice from a green perspective. Both fuels are similar in quality except for the octane rating which is a lot lower for UL91 as there is no octane boosting impact of the lead additive. However not all engine types are suitable for UL91 due to its lower octane rating. Your plane manufacturer should be able to advise your further what fuel formulations are the best choice for you.

AVGAS is developed for the specific needs for planes, where automotive gasoline or MOGAS is designed for cars. Fueling planes with automotive gasoline is NOT SAFE. AVGAS has a higher octane rating.

Yes, there are several unleaded alternatives for AVGAS 100LL available on the market, such as AVGAS UL91, UL93, and UL94. These fuels are designed to provide similar performance to AVGAS 100LL but without the lead content, making them more environmentally friendly. Pilots and aircraft owners can choose the appropriate unleaded alternative based on their aircraft’s engine requirements and operational needs.

But not all planes are suitable for the lower octane unleaded fuels. There is several developments underway to develop an acceptable in-kind replacement for AVGAS 100LL.
